After marrying the Queen of Attolia in the last book Eugenides had become King, not something he wanted. This book he must come to terms with that.
Within the series I like this book the best. I thought Costis, the narrator, was an interesting voice. I was half way through the book before it occurred to me each story had a different narrator. I am not entirely positive why I found that interesting, but there it is.
I enjoyed how almost everyone completely dismissed the knowledge they gained throughout the story. They had a preconceived notion of who the king was and he was able to fool them about his true nature and abilities.
